Ruapekapeka Commemoration

The battle at Ruapekapeka was huge for the Wynyard family. RH Wynyard was second in command of the British army and on the other side there were families which, within a generation, were related to the Wynyard family mostly through RH's son Gladwin. This 175th anniversary of the battle is on 10th January 2021.

Join the commemoration at 7am at Ruapekapeka, the programme goes to 1pm. I hope to see you there.

I agree Sharlaine. The site is fascinating and inspiring from an engineering point of view, but disturbing at the same time. I found it to be a very spiritual place but also confronting given our family connections. Lots of conflicting emotions.

I went up there years before I knew my ancestors fought on both sides at Ruapekapeka. It was a fascinating but chilling experience. I felt a lot of inner conflict visiting the pa and now know it was a start to a spiritual awakening. "The Bat's Nest" is an amazing site and gives you an insight of the difficulties both sides faced.
